Richard Jackson Ltd were heavily involved in the emergency structural work and were instrumental in ensuring the partial retention of the Grade I Listed façade of the building.
After a painstaking restoration, five years on, it has since been restored and rebuilt.
Dave Clarke, a structural engineer at Richard Jackson Ltd commented on the damage the fire caused: “There was hardly any of the building left, just a basic timber frame, most of the upper floors had been lost, and the back had totally collapsed. This has now been reinstated by the introduction of a steel frame building to provide the structural support to all the remaining timber membranes and the new area of construction.”
The steel frame encountered several problems due to working within a constrained space. The frame itself bears on a new concrete raft in the basement. The basement remains as it was pre fire but has been repaired and renovated where necessary.
Even though the original house was mainly destroyed, certain features of the building which were salvaged have been incorporated, such as parts of the staircase.
Dave Clarke added: “The majority of the staircase is now new but has been done so that it replicates the original oak staircase that was once there, ensuring the heritage look and feel was not lost. It is a very interesting and intricate installation.”
Following the work undertaken by Richard Jackson Ltd during the restoration of Cupola House, the company was shortlisted for a Building Conservation Award and received a commendation. Employees from Richard Jackson Ltd have attended two events over the past month – the first being the RICS Awards 2017 East of England dinner on 10 May, and the second being the SJCC Annual Supper and Awards (Suffolk Joint Consultative Committee) on 11 May.
