Birthday Policy is a Winner!

In January, we introduced a new HR policy; an additional day of annual leave to be taken on or close to your birthday. This new policy provides the opportunity for our staff to some additional time to enjoy themselves and enjoy their special day. An extra day away from the working environment is a small step in our approach to recognise the needs of our staff and for them to enjoy a relaxing birthday, without the need to worry about work.

One of the first members of staff to enjoy their extra day as part of the Birthday Policy, took the opportunity to explore and get some fresh air, even in January! The walk was found here. This handy website enables users to search for a wide range of activities in North Norfolk, from walks and tourist attractions to horse riding. It also provides information on how to get there via public transport too, to assist in traveling more sustainably!

In the words of our colleague taking advantage of the incentive, “I believe it’s the first birthday I have ever taken off work and it was great. I thoroughly enjoyed my day, in the cool, misty, January air. We walked for about 5 miles, stopped for a great coffee in Glandford and visited places I’d never been before around Cley next the Sea. I shall certainly be doing the same next year.”

In recognising the benefits of being active, walking can help with mental wellbeing. It improves self-perception and self-esteem in addition to mood and sleep quality. Other benefits can include a reduced stress level as well as a reduction in anxiety and fatigue. Did you know that physically active people have up to a 30% reduced risk of becoming depressed? By staying active, it can help those suffering with managing their symptoms. Even more health benefits associated with walking can be found on The Ramblers website.

We hope more of our staff will discover the benefits of our new Birthday Policy and perhaps even take up a new activity or hobby in the process.
