Rail – Signal Gantry, Ipswich

Client: First Engineering Limited

Works were required to be carried out to a signal gantry where there was risk of the signals being ignored due to the ambiguity of which signal applied to which line. These works involved the installation of indicator boards.

Richard Jackson Ltd received instruction to structurally assess the existing gantry and ensure that the structure was capable of withstanding the additional wind loads that would be imposed by the addition of four 2 x 1m sign boards. The sign boards had to be fitted to the existing tubular steel truss and be so articulated that they could be rotated flat for cleaning by personnel on the adjacent gantry walkways.

A design was produced that allowed the boards to be fixed by lindaptors. This method of fixing was employed in order to retain the structural integrity of the signal gantry.
